Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) is a type A (acidic) low molecular weight keratin that pairs with cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in epithelial tissues such as gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts, as well as endocrine, exocrine, and mesothelial cells. Cytokeratin 18 is mainly found in non-squamous epithelia and is present in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the KRT18 gene are associated with cryptogenic cirrhosis. Cytokeratin subtype expression assists in distinguishing epithelial malignancies and is useful in tumor diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometry assays.
