Target Information
Outer-Surface Protein A (OspA), a lipoprotein from Borrelia burgdorferi encoded on its plasmid lp54, is a major component of the spirochete’s extracellular matrix. OspA likely serves as a lipid anchor. During tick feeding, spirochetes migrate from the midgut to the salivary glands and are transmitted to the mammalian host. This transition may involve changes in expression of B. burgdorferi genes. Upon transmission, OspA transcript levels can vary, and expression of associated proteins may be regulated by tick life cycle, temperature, pH, nutrient changes, and infection progression. B. burgdorferi can attach to various tissues in both vertebrate hosts and tick vectors, indicating that physiological factors beyond pH and temperature modulate gene expression.
