Target Information

This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XV collagen, a member of the FACIT collagen family (fibril-associated collagens with interrupted helices).
Type XV collagen is widely distributed across tissues, with strong expression at basement membrane zones, suggesting a role in adhesion between basement membranes and underlying connective tissue stroma.
The C-terminal fragment of type XV collagen, known as restin, is an antiangiogenic protein related to endostatin.
Mouse studies indicate that collagen XV deficiency may lead to muscle and microvessel deterioration.
