MTCO2는 미토콘드리아 전자 전달계의 마지막 효소인 사이토크롬 c 산화효소의 구성 요소입니다. 이 효소는 산화적 인산화를 통해 ATP 합성을 유도하며, NADH와 succinate로부터 유래한 전자를 산소로 전달하여 물을 생성합니다. 전자는 cytochrome c로부터 subunit 2의 구리 A 중심과 subunit 1의 heme A를 거쳐 binuclear center(BNC)로 이동하며, 산소를 물로 환원시킵니다.
