Target Information

Apolipoprotein B (apo B) in human plasma is a major protein of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) with a molecular mass of approximately 260–500 kDa. Apo B binds to specific receptors on cell membranes and is involved in the removal of LDL and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol from circulation.
LDL acts as a carrier protein for cholesterol in the blood and mediates uptake and clearance of cholesterol via receptor binding on capillary walls.
Oxidatively modified LDL is present in atherosclerotic lesions and is recognized by macrophages through scavenger receptors A and CD36.
Apolipoprotein B is synthesized mainly in the liver and exists as two isoforms, apoB-48 and apoB-100, encoded by a single gene.
Mutations in the Apolipoprotein B gene or its regulatory region can cause disorders such as hypobetalipoproteinemia and hypercholesterolemia.
