Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family and the TGF-beta superfamily. These proteins are characterized by a polybasic proteolytic processing site that produces a mature protein containing seven conserved cysteine residues. Members regulate cell growth and differentiation in embryonic and adult tissues. Studies in yeast suggest involvement in aging. The protein is transcribed from both monocistronic and bicistronic mRNAs, the latter also encoding growth differentiation factor 1.
