Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. This receptor (~90 kDa) has three major functional domains: the N-terminal domain, DNA-binding domain, and the androgen-binding domain.
AR is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

The AR signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also in nonreproductive organs including muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Androgen Receptor is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase activity. Inhibition of the MEK1/2 pathway directly correlates with changes in AR phosphorylation.

Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in this gene cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
