Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Multiple isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform found in normal tissues.
It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays key roles in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is implicated in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Its expression may increase in certain carcinomas and may be linked to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels of CD44, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate its expression upon stimulation.
The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, generating multiple functionally distinct isoforms. Structural and functional diversity of CD44 arises from this splicing process.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may also be related to tumor metastasis formation.
