GBE1는 글리코겐 가지 효소로, 글리코겐 사슬의 α-1,4 결합된 글루코실 단위를 α-1,6 위치로 전이시켜 가지 구조를 형성합니다. 가지 형성은 글리코겐의 용해도를 증가시키고 세포 내 삼투압을 감소시키는 데 필수적입니다. 이 효소는 간과 근육에서 가장 높은 수준으로 발현되며, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 글리코겐 저장 질환 IV (Andersen 병)와 관련이 있습니다.
