The CDKN2A gene produces multiple transcript variants differing in their first exons.
Two variants encode CDK4 kinase inhibitors, while another transcript encodes an alternate open reading frame (ARF) protein that stabilizes p53 by sequestering MDM2.
These isoforms and ARF products share regulatory roles in cell cycle G1 progression.
Mutations or deletions of this gene are common in various tumors, highlighting its importance as a tumor suppressor gene.
