Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is expressed at higher levels on precursor cells and decreases with maturation. Hepatocytes are the main source of EPO in the fetus, while interstitial kidney cells become the primary source after birth. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and may also contribute to neuronal tissue protection and repair.
