Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a crucial role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression. Phosphorylation at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell cycle regulation.
c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development. Deregulated expression of c-Myc induces apoptosis in different cell types. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins with Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene is observed in various human tumors including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-Myc locus to immunoglobulin loci is described in Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative diseases. Aberrant expression occurs in tumors of colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, thyroidal, and hematopoietic origins.
