Cells respond to environmental stress by increasing expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs).
HSPB1 (HSP27) is a small heat shock protein functioning as a molecular chaperone that helps maintain denatured proteins in a folding-competent state.
It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates biological processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins.
Mutations in HSPB1 may cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
