Target Information

In response to adverse environmental changes, cells increase the expression of heat shock or stress proteins. HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1 or HSP27) is a small heat shock protein functioning as a molecular chaperone that maintains denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization. Through its chaperone activity, HSP27 regulates biological processes including phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in this gene can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy 2B.
