Target Information

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, inducing membrane hyperpolarization via Cl⁻ channel opening associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R).
GABAA-Rs are therapeutic targets for sedatives, anxiolytics, and hypnotics, and are implicated in epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The receptor is a multimeric complex composed of multiple subunits (α, β, γ variants). Coexpression of a γ-subunit is necessary for benzodiazepine modulation.
Phosphorylation of β-subunits modulates GABAA-R function.
