Product Specific Information
This antibody recognizes Bcl-2, a 26 kDa intracellular proto-oncogene with anti-apoptotic effects. It is expressed in the outer mitochondrial membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, and nuclear envelope.
Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that can either inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family interact through dimerization to modulate apoptosis.
- Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect.
- Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis.
Overexpression or translocation of BCL-2 is associated with several human cancers, including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer. In follicular lymphoma, neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2 protein, unlike normal germinal centers. Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ at their C-terminal ends due to alternative splicing.
