Target Information

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis.
It affects approximately 350 million people worldwide. Immunization against hepatitis B is an essential part of preventive medicine and is offered to all children in around 30 countries.
HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family. Infection with HBV is typically more severe than hepatitis A virus infection.
In some individuals, persistent intracellular viral carriage can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma development.
There are currently about 400 million HBV carriers globally, making HBV one of the most common human pathogens.
