Target Information
VRL-1 (also known as TRPV2) is a calcium-permeable, non-selective cation channel with outward rectification, regulated in part by growth factors such as IGF1, PDGF, and morphogenetic neuropeptides.
It does not respond to capsaicin, acid, or moderate heat but is activated by high temperatures (~52°C).
Within sensory ganglia, VRL-1 is expressed in a subset of medium- to large-diameter neurons, suggesting a role in high-threshold heat response.
VRL-1 transcripts are also found outside the sensory nervous system, indicating activation by stimuli other than heat.
VRL-1 is one of six members of the vanilloid-like TRP-channel family, now known as the TRPV family.
