Target Information
Human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, subfamily Pneumovirinae. It causes common respiratory tract infections such as measles and mumps.
RSV has a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genome encoding three envelope glycoproteins:
- SH (small hydrophobic) protein of unknown function
- G (major glycoprotein, attachment protein)
- F (fusion protein)
The F proteins on the viral surface cause membranes of nearby cells to merge, forming syncytia.
While RSV typically produces mild symptoms in adults, it is one of the leading causes of lower respiratory tract infections and hospital visits during infancy and childhood.
