The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the dual specificity protein phosphatase subfamily. These phosphatases inactivate their target kinases by dephosphorylating both phosphoserine/threonine and phosphotyrosine residues. They negatively regulate members of the MAPK superfamily, which are associated with cellular proliferation and differentiation.
Different members of this family show distinct substrate specificities, tissue distribution, subcellular localization, and inducibility by extracellular stimuli. DUSP5 inactivates ERK1, is highly expressed in pancreas and brain, and localizes to the nucleus.
