Target Information
The MAOA gene encodes monoamine oxidase A, an enzyme responsible for degrading amine neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. The protein localizes to the mitochondrial outer membrane. The gene is located adjacent to a related gene on the opposite strand of chromosome X. Mutations in this gene can cause monoamine oxidase deficiency, also known as Brunner syndrome.
