Ferritin Light Chain gene encodes the light subunit of the ferritin protein, the major intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Ferritin consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light chains. Variation in subunit composition can affect iron uptake and release rates across tissues. Defects in this gene are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. Multiple pseudogenes are present.
