Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into the active 17 kDa form upon inflammasome activation. IL-1 beta lacks a classical signal peptide and is secreted via an alternate mechanism alongside caspase-1. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1 beta plays a critical role in innate immune defense and inflammation, and elevated levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions. Neutralizing antibodies against IL-1 beta have potential therapeutic value.
