ATP citrate lyase는 세포질 내 acetyl-CoA 합성에 관여하는 주요 효소로, 동일한 서브유닛 4개로 구성된 테트라머 형태(분자량 약 440,000)입니다. 이 효소는 citrate와 CoA로부터 acetyl-CoA와 oxaloacetate를 생성하며, ATP를 ADP와 phosphate로 가수분해합니다. 생성된 acetyl-CoA는 지방 및 콜레스테롤 생합성 경로에 사용되며, 신경조직에서는 acetylcholine 생합성에도 관여할 수 있습니다. 이 유전자는 서로 다른 두 가지 isoform을 암호화하는 transcript variant를 가지고 있습니다.
