Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Interaction of IFNα with its receptor activates multiple signaling pathways involved in innate immune defense against viral infection.
In humans, the IFNα gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms, along with single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist across mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced mainly by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFNα is a potent antiviral cytokine that also modulates adaptive immunity. Dysregulation of IFNα is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
