Target Information

Cadherins are a multigene family of calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecules. They are transmembrane glycoproteins composed of an extracellular domain that mediates Ca²⁺-dependent intercellular adhesion through homophilic interactions, a transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic domain. The extracellular domain consists of subdomains EC1–EC5. Homologies among cadherin family members are highest in the cytoplasmic domain and EC1/EC2 regions, and lower in EC5 and the transmembrane region. Binding specificity resides primarily in the N-terminal portion.
Four major cadherins have been identified in mammals: neuronal (N), epithelial (E), placental (P), and muscle (M) cadherins. M-cadherin is absent in fibroblasts but expressed at low levels in myoblasts and upregulated during myotube formation, suggesting a role in skeletal muscle cell differentiation.
