Target Information
This gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor expressed in oligodendroglial tumors of the brain. The protein regulates ventral neuroectodermal progenitor cell fate and is involved in chromosomal translocation t(14;21)(q11.2;q22) associated with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The gene is located on chromosome 21, a region implicated in learning deficits associated with Down syndrome.
Tissue specificity: Expressed in the brain, particularly in oligodendrocytes. Strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas, with weak to moderate expression in astrocytomas. Expression in glioblastomas is highly variable.
