Target Information
This gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor expressed in oligodendroglial tumors of the brain. The protein regulates ventral neuroectodermal progenitor cell fate. The gene is associated with chromosomal translocation t(14;21)(q11.2;q22) linked to T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is located on chromosome 21, a region implicated in learning deficits in Down syndrome.
Tissue specificity: Expressed in the brain, particularly in oligodendrocytes. Strongly expressed in oligodendrogliomas, weak to moderate in astrocytomas, and variably in glioblastomas.
