Target Information
CD146 (MCAM) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed at cell-cell junctions in endothelial cells and various normal and malignant cell types.
CD146 functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule and a signal transduction molecule, recruiting Fyn kinase and inducing tyrosine phosphorylation of intracellular proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton assembly.
It plays a key role in endothelial cohesion and melanoma cell interaction with vascular elements, facilitating tumor spread. Additionally, CD146 may act as an adhesion molecule in neural crest cells during embryonic development and as a surface receptor triggering phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2, leading to transient increases in intracellular calcium concentration.
