Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein involved in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC complex (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex) with other tumor suppressors and DNA damage sensors. BRCA1 interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes, playing roles in transcription, DNA double-strand break repair, and recombination.
Mutations in BRCA1 account for about 40% of inherited breast cancers and over 80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects localization and function, and several disease-associated variants have been identified. A related pseudogene is located on chromosome 17.
