Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits serve as plasma carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits, identical to those of plasma origin. Upon activation by thrombin and calcium ions, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits to yield the active enzyme, factor XIIIa. This enzyme acts as a transglutaminase, catalyzing crosslinking between fibrin molecules to stabilize the clot, and also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin. Factor XIII deficiency can lead to bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
