Target Information
Adipose tissue functions as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin.
Perilipin is an intracellular neutral lipid droplet protein localized on the surface of lipid droplets and regulated hormonally. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A and modulates hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), which hydrolyzes triacylglycerol.
Perilipin expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells, with two known isoforms (Perilipin A and B) produced by alternative splicing of a single-copy gene.
