Mucins (MUCs) are heavily glycosylated glycoproteins synthesized as membrane-bound or secreted proteins. They exhibit aberrant expression in various malignancies and normally play a protective role for epithelial tissues in the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genito-urinary tracts.
Mucins are involved in epithelial renewal, differentiation, cell adhesion, and signaling modulation.
MUC5B is vital for maintaining oral health and may be implicated in respiratory and oral diseases. Its expression has been studied in gastric carcinoma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
