Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of ligands, which belong to the TGF-beta superfamily of signaling molecules. GDNFs possess neurotrophic properties and have potential applications in gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. Artemin supports the survival of several peripheral neuron populations and dopaminergic CNS neurons. Its expression pattern near these neurons supports its role in both the peripheral and central nervous systems. This protein acts as a ligand for the RET receptor and uses GFR-alpha 3 as a coreceptor. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
