Product Specific Information
This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope of the cell surface antigen STRO-1 expressed by bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells and nucleated erythroid precursors, but not by committed hematopoietic progenitors.
Target Information
STRO-1 is a cell surface antigen expressed by stromal elements in human bone marrow. It binds to approximately 10% of bone marrow mononuclear cells, most of which are nucleated erythroid precursors, and does not react with committed progenitor cells (CFU-GM, BFU-E, CFU-Mix). STRO-1-positive/Glycophorin A-negative populations are enriched for fibroblast colony forming cells (CFU-F). Under long-term bone marrow culture conditions, STRO-1-positive cells form adherent stromal layers containing adipocytes, smooth muscle cells, and fibroblasts. These cells can differentiate into multiple mesenchymal lineages including stromal cells supportive of hematopoiesis, adipocytes, osteoblasts, and chondrocytes. STRO-1 is a valuable marker for identification and functional characterization of human bone marrow stromal cell precursors.
