Target Information
Specificity of vesicular transport is regulated by the interaction between vesicle-associated membrane protein (synaptobrevin/VAMP) and target membrane protein (syntaxin). Along with SNAP25, these form a complex that serves as a binding site for membrane fusion machinery.
SNAP23 is a homolog of SNAP25, expressed ubiquitously to facilitate vesicle/target membrane fusion in non-neuronal tissues. It binds tightly to syntaxins and synaptobrevins/VAMPs, acting as an essential component of the high-affinity receptor for membrane fusion and a key regulator of vesicle docking and fusion. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
