STK25 (YSK1) is a serine/threonine kinase belonging to the GCK family. It acts as an upstream regulator of MAP kinase signaling pathways. Protein kinases transfer a phosphate group from ATP to substrate proteins, mediating signal transduction in eukaryotic cells.
They regulate metabolism, transcription, cell cycle, cytoskeletal rearrangement, movement, apoptosis, and differentiation.
The protein kinase family includes over 500 gene products, classified into 8 major groups based on catalytic domain sequence.
The STE group (homologs of yeast Sterile 7, 11, 20 kinases) consists of kinases related to MAPK cascade families (Ste7/MAP2K, Ste11/MAP3K, Ste20/MAP4K).
MAP kinase cascades have been well characterized in the yeast pheromone response pathway, where pheromones activate MAPK signaling via Ste surface receptors.
