Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but may also be present in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
At the tissue level, CD4 expression is found in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain non-lymphoid tissues such as brain and gut.
CD4 functions to initiate or enhance T-cell activation through its association with the T-cell receptor complex and Lck kinase. It may also mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
