Target Information
In mammals, several isoforms of p21-Activated Protein Kinases (PAKs) have been identified. Alpha-PAK (PAK-1) and beta-PAK (PAK-3) are predominantly expressed in the brain, whereas gamma-PAK (PAK-2) is ubiquitously expressed (Jakobi et al., 2003).
Mutations in the gene encoding PAK-3 are associated with X-linked mental retardation, and studies indicate that PAK-3 plays a key role in synapse formation and hippocampal plasticity (Boda et al., 2004).
PAK-3 is also involved in the regulation of cell shape, motility, and apoptosis (Jakobi et al., 2003; Walter et al., 1998).
Autophosphorylation of Thr402 is essential for PAK activation (Jakobi et al., 2000).
