Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, retaining crystallins throughout life, making them extremely stable. Mammalian crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma are considered a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after development. Mutations or aging affecting gamma-crystallins are associated with cataract formation.
