Target Information
Proteins that directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs), play an important role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs.
The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of abundant hnRNPs that bind pre-mRNA in vivo and poly(G)/poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro.
These M proteins belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family of RNA-binding proteins, showing similarity to a hypothetical RNA-binding protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
They also contain a methionine/arginine-rich hexapeptide repeat motif (MR repeat) resembling a repeat in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor, involved in 3'-end maturation of pre-mRNAs.
Immunologically related M proteins exist in eukaryotes ranging from human to yeast.
