Target Information

Proteins that directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs), play an important role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs. The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of four abundant hnRNPs that bind pre-mRNA in vivo and interact strongly with poly(G) and poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro. These M proteins belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family of RNA-binding proteins, showing similarity to a hypothetical RNA-binding protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They possess an unusual hexapeptide-repeat region rich in methionine and arginine residues (MR repeat motif), resembling a repeat found in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in 3'-end maturation of pre-mRNAs. Proteins immunologically related to M exist across diverse eukaryotes from humans to yeast.
