Target Information
Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is a nuclear-encoded protein that translocates to mitochondria, where it plays an essential role in maintaining and expressing mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). It regulates mtDNA replication and transcription, ensuring proper mitochondrial function. TFAM interacts with autophagy proteins such as LC3 via its LC3 interacting region (LIR) motif, contributing to mtDNA quality control and inflammation regulation. TFAM levels vary by tissue and influence mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) capacity. Dysregulation of TFAM can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and is implicated in neurodegenerative and mtDNA-related diseases.
