Target Information
Members of the trefoil family are characterized by having at least one copy of the trefoil motif, a 40-amino acid domain containing three conserved disulfides. They are stable secretory proteins expressed in gastrointestinal mucosa. Their functions may include protection of the mucosa from insults, stabilization of the mucus layer, and promotion of epithelial healing.
This gene, expressed in the gastric mucosa, is also studied for its expression in human tumors. It is part of a gene cluster on chromosome 21 with two other trefoil family members.
