NKX6.1 is a bi-functional transcription factor active in both the central nervous system and pancreas. It regulates gene expression and repression, contributing to the development of motoneurons, oligodendrocytes, and insulin-secreting beta cells. NKX6.1 interacts with Pax6 and Pdx-1 near the homeobox DNA-binding domain and is a promising target for diabetes and neurological disease research.
