Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) catalyzes the transfer of high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to cytosolic creatine, functioning as part of the creatine kinase isoenzyme family.
It exists as two isoenzymes—sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK—encoded by separate genes.
Mitochondrial creatine kinase forms both dimers and octamers, unlike the exclusively dimeric cytosolic isoenzymes.
Sarcomeric MtCK shares approximately 80% homology with ubiquitous MtCK.
This gene contains motifs common to nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, suggesting a role in coordinated mitochondrial biogenesis.
Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
