Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes differ significantly across species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. The MRPL15 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the EcoL15 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 15q.
