Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Protein composition varies significantly among species, making sequence homology-based identification difficult. The MRPL40 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and deletions may be associated with velo-cardio-facial syndrome and DiGeorge syndrome.
