Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins of the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, which hinders recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, and pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 6p and 12p. Read-through transcription also occurs between this gene and the neighboring LIPT1 gene.
