Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (DEG/ENaC) superfamily. Members of this family are amiloride-sensitive sodium channels containing intracellular N and C termini, two hydrophobic transmembrane regions, and a large extracellular loop with conserved cysteine residues.
The encoded protein is expressed in most brain neurons and may function as an ion channel subunit. It acts as a cation channel with high affinity for sodium, gated by extracellular protons and inhibited by amiloride. ASIC1 is permeable to Ca²⁺, Li⁺, and K⁺, and is expressed in dorsal root ganglia, sciatic nerves, olfactory bulb, cortical regions, hippocampus, amygdala, and cerebellum. Isoform 3 is expressed only in dorsal root ganglion, while isoform 1 is found in DRG, spinal cord, trigeminal ganglia, and mesencephalic nucleus.
